Community maintainers and moderators

  • Jul. 2nd, 2008 at 8:30 AM
We've been having some conversations about how to avoid a co-maintainer removing other maintainers. As part of that, we are looking to expand the rights of community moderators - so that maintainers can appoint moderators to help them with a community, instead of co-maintainers. What do you think a moderator should be able to do in a community?

Also, what about a feature that would not let a maintainer remove a maintainer who had been appointed before them (like a seniority of maintainers)?

I'm sitting here with some serious writer's block. I don't know what I'm going to write for the contest; I took a stab at it last night and all I came up with was something remarkably pathetic.

My birthday was last Sunday, which mostly escaped notice except by people who saw on Facebook and of course my close friends. I decided it was too much of a bother to throw myself a big party this year, mostly because I was far too busy attending other things. (You'll see why later.)

- Thursday we went as a small group to celebrate my birthday. We went to a local hole in the wall Japanese place and then shot pool. I was surprisingly worn down by the end of it, but I finally figured out why, and it had nothing to do with exercise and everything having to do with being a woman. (Nnrgh.)

- Friday, I came home from work, ate dinner with Andy, and then started putting together the set for Sunday. I don't know how it came to be that I was going to be leading worship on my birthday... but I guess I couldn't expect Kiki to do so when he was preaching, and the youth kids are in no way capable of it right now.

- Saturday, we met at 9am to rehearse for Sunday, primarily so that our bassist could get some stuff done before the wedding. Yes, it was Kat and Quen's wedding, and since the wedding was at 2pm, we had to rehearse early. I dredged myself out of bed and carpooled up with Everett. I also discovered - a little too late - that the copy place around the corner from the church opens at 10am. Eileen was able to make it (a good surprise, since she had said she wasn't going to), so we were able to rehearse the entire set with all of the musicians. We left at 11, I got in a brief workout and then doused myself and carpooled back up to Berkeley with Joy and Andy.

It was hot. No, let me clarify - it was 90'F, the tail end of a heat wave, and it was HOT. The church did not have air conditioning. The hotel did not have air conditioning. I didn't bring a second pair of flip flops like I normally do. I didn't even bring my water bottle like I usually do. So I was hot, thirsty, and my feet hurt. However, we found a TapEx and a Half Price Books to while away the time between the wedding and the dinner reception.

Andy and I were seated at the pastors table. We found this profoundly unfair, because Kiki, who is a pastor at our church, was seated at a fun table that was mixed married/single. However, I did get to sit next to Cindy, my former roommate, and we did have a good chat. But still! Three pastors and their wives and a deacon and his wife... and us. We bailed right after the toast.

- Sunday morning. Scraped myself out of bed at 7am and hit the road at 7:40 with Everett in tow. Two youth girls joined us that morning, and we finished up prep for the set in the hour before the service. It ended up being pretty rockin', and I'm glad I was able to be a part of youth Sunday... even if it were on my birthday. Ate an early lunch with Joni, headed out to train with Lily, drove home to shower and change back into my church clothes... and then carpooled down with Joy, Everett, and Andy down to PK's graduation.

My pastor was getting hooded for his Doctorate of Ministry degree, and we went. Saw a bunch of former classmates that all attended HOC3, including my best friend from junior high/high school. Went to Kam Nang in Milpitas for dinner with our car and PK's family, so it was an intimate Korean dinner for 8. Drove back home, arrived at 10.

- Monday. Slept in, because I took the day off. Once I woke up, called my parents to see if I could see my grandfather and to see if they wanted to get lunch for my birthday. Turns out he was being moved at 12:15, and if I wanted to see him, I had to hurry. So I got out the door a half an hour later, and made it down there at 11:45 to see him. He'd had a minor stroke the week before, and is in the process of recovery. But it was good to see him and my family... he's moved to a rehab/PT facility. Afterwards, ate with my parents at a local Chinese restaurant, then headed home.

Once I got home, it was all I could do to keep my eyes open... so I decided to take a nap. Once I got up, though, I was still exhausted. I made a difficult decision and stayed home for the afternoon, and did 40 minutes on the elliptical instead of 3 hours at martial arts.

So, as you can see, I really didn't celebrate my birthday at all this year. It was mostly focused on other people. I guess I'm okay with that... but next year I am so throwing myself a big party.
